The Right Treatment Starts With the Right Diagnosis

Pigmentation is common in Chennai, and the sun, humidity, and heat here make it worse. But not all dark patches are the same problem and that distinction matters more than most patients realise when they first come in.

Melasma behaves differently from post-acne marks. Sun damage behaves differently from hormonal pigmentation. Treating them with the same approach, particularly aggressive lasers or strong creams without proper diagnosis, often worsens things before they improve, sometimes permanently. Many patients arrive having already used two or three different products without knowing which type of pigmentation they were targeting. A correct diagnosis upfront saves a significant amount of time and skin.

Types of Pigmentation We Treat

Each type behaves differently and needs a different treatment approach. Most patients have more than one type running together; the plan is built around the full picture.

How Treatment Is Approached Measured, Not Aggressive

For many patients, topical treatment comes first, prescription depigmenting creams, sometimes combined with oral medication where hormonal factors are significant. Chemical peels accelerate fading and improve overall skin clarity. Laser treatment is introduced when the depth of pigmentation warrants it or when topical treatment has plateaued.

For melasma specifically, stabilizing the skin before starting laser almost always gives better long-term results. Melasma treated too aggressively tends to rebound, sometimes darker than before. The pace here is deliberate. Sun protection is non-negotiable in the treatment plan: in Chennai’s UV levels, inadequate sun protection between sessions undoes a meaningful portion of what’s achieved in the clinic. Maintenance is part of the long-term picture, particularly for melasma.

Frequently Asked Questions

Discover personalied care & expertise at our clinic, where we blend artistry and pervision to enhance you confidence.

Can pigmentation be removed completely?
Post-acne marks and sun damage respond very well and can clear significantly. Melasma is managed and controlled rather than permanently cured. Dr. Suresh is direct at consultations about what's realistic for your type.
Will pigmentation come back?
Melasma can return with sun exposure or hormonal changes. Other types are less likely to recur once treated with consistent sun protection. Maintenance is sometimes needed for melasma long-term.
Is laser safe for Indian skin?
Yes, with correct calibration and supervision. The risk with Indian skin is incorrect settings; that's a clinical decision, not a machine setting.
Do I need laser for all types of pigmentation?
No. A good proportion of pigmentation cases respond well to topical treatment and peels alone. Laser is recommended when it's the right next step, not as a default.
